Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) Group Program
Reclaim Your Life from Persistent Chronic Pain with Brain-Based Healing
Have you tried physical therapy, injections, medications, and specialist visits without lasting relief? If standard treatments haven’t resolved your symptoms, the issue may not be damaged tissue—it may be a hypervigilant nervous system.
At Lyons Counselling and Consulting, we offer an 8-Week (Online) Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) Group Program for adults across Vancouver and British Columbia. Rooted in breakthrough pain neuroscience, this course teaches you how to unlearn chronic pain signals and restore safety to your brain and body.
What is Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)?
Developed by Alan Gordon, LCSW (founder of the Pain Psychology Center) and supported by the pioneering research of Dr. Howard Schubiner, MD, Pain Reprocessing Therapy is an evidence-based psychological treatment designed to eliminate or significantly reduce chronic pain.
A landmark study published in JAMA Psychiatry demonstrated that 66% of chronic back pain patients became pain-free or nearly pain-free after 4 weeks of PRT, with results maintained at a 1-year follow-up.
The Science: Neuroplastic Pain vs. Structural Pain
Not all pain stems from physical injury. Pain Reprocessing Therapy targets neuroplastic pain (also known as Tension Myositis Syndrome/TMS, Mind-Body Syndrome, or Central Sensitization):
-
Structural Pain: Occurs when there is active tissue damage or acute inflammation (e.g., a fresh fracture or severe tear).
-
Neuroplastic Pain: Occurs when the brain misinterprets safe somatic signals as dangerous, keeping pain pathways firing long after structural healing has taken place.
When your brain perceives threat—whether from stress, emotional distress, or fear of movement—it amplifies sensations into physical pain. Because these neural pathways were learned through fear and repetition, they can be unlearned through targeted therapeutic intervention.
The 4 Core Foundations of PRT
Our 8-week online group course walks you step-by-step through the clinical framework pioneered by Gordon and Schubiner:
-
Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE)
Understanding how danger signals, hypervigilance, and brain pathways generate real physical pain removes the fear that fuels the pain cycle.
-
Somatic Tracking
The primary exercise in PRT combining mindfulness, non-judgmental observation, and lightheartedness. You learn to attend to physical sensations with a lens of safety rather than danger.
-
Cognitive & Emotional Safety
Identifying and addressing internal threat triggers—such as pressure, perfectionism, self-criticism, and emotional suppression—to calm an overactive central nervous system.
-
Gradual Exposure to Movement
Safely reintroducing activities, physical movements, and environments you have previously avoided, breaking the association between movement and pain.
Why Join a PRT Group Program?
Group therapy provides distinct therapeutic advantages when recovering from neuroplastic pain:
-
Reduce Isolation: Connect with peers in BC/across Canada who understand the invisible burden of living with persistent pain.
-
Shared Learning: Observe live somatic tracking demonstrations and experience collective reframing.
-
Structured Progress: An 8-week structured roadmap keeps you accountable and consistent in rewiring your nervous system.
-
Accessible from Home: Attend securely online via Zoom from Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, or anywhere in British Columbia.
